Patti LaBelle to Star in Broadway Musical "Fela" in Sept.

July 19, 2010 5:45 PM | Patti LaBelle | R&B | Comments (1)

Patti LaBelle, R&B diva, is set to join the hit Broadway Musical “Fela” in September. While Tony Award winner Lillias White performs a series of concerts in Australia, Patti Labelle will take the role of mother Funmilayo Kuti, according to New York Post. Since 1998's solo concert series “Patti LaBelle on Broadway”, the upcoming project will be her first.

She had appeared in Broadway, like in the musical revival of Your Arms Too Short to Box with God, and took the role as Mama Morton in the Los Angeles run of Chicago.

“Fela” features a book by Jones and Jim Lewis wherein audiences are welcomed into extravagant, decadent, and a rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. The music is a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies which was used in concerts, musical theatre and dance to explore Kuti’s life as artist, an activist in political manner, and a revolutionary musician.

The schedule of LaBelle’s performances will be announced soon. Let’s just wait for updates.
