Jay-Z Stepping Down as President of Def Jam Records

Jay-Z (A.K.A. Shawn Carter) is stepping down as president of Universal Music Group's Def Jam Records effective by the end of the year.  According to Jay-Z, "Now it's time for me to take on new challenges...I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy". The 38 year old legendary rapper took over as president of the rap label in 2005 and signed Grammy-nominated R&B singers Rihanna and Ne-Yo.   

Jay-Z will continue recording for UMG's Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam label, but will focus his attention on other ventures which includes the expansion of his 40/40 Nightclubs.

Under Jay-Z realm, Def Jam earned a total of 11 Grammy nominations in 2007, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Rihanna's smash hit, "Umbrella."     

According to Antonio 'L.A.' Reid," chairman of Island Def Jam, "Jay made it clear to us that he feels the time has come to take on different challenges in his life. While we regret his decision to move on, we certainly respect it."
