Biography: My name is Gripp, and I don't own a gun. I've
never been shot, nor shot at. I never sold drugs, and I'm not in a
gang. But I rap. For some reason, people find that strange; I don't
think they should. In an age when rap music is dominated by
exaggerated icons of masculinity and emotionlessness, I find myself
standing for a different ideal: change. Change for this music, which
demonizes its performers. Change for the cities that breed children
to idolize murderers. Change for our country, a country whose policy
it is to ignore entire segments of its population, hungry and
desperate for help. Hip-hop culture, rap music, was born from
struggle, as a release and an escape, as a cry for help. I want to
see hip-hop return to that, but more importantly, I want to see the
conditions that caused hip-hop to be created resolved. |
